In my practice, I come across many men who identify as straight but engage in having sex with men or are attracted to watching gay . They’re attracted to sexual behaviors with men. What is it that gets so many queer men hot for straight bros?

When I ask them why they don't just use grindr, and the answer is usually along the lines of "I only like straight guys" or "Head is head man, pleasure is pleasure". From these men’s perspective, they can have it both ways — the privileges of identifying as straight and the pleasure and excitement of same-sex relationships on the side — without their identity being threatened. So why is that?

Research into the partner preferences of gay men suggests that, on average, they tend to be drawn to masculinity. For example, gay men tend to be attracted to masculine-looking faces and to other signs of masculinity, such as muscularity. Gay men also rate prospective partners who describe themselves as masculine more favorably than those who describe themselves as feminine.

This preference for masculinity is strongest among gay men who identify as masculine. The basic idea is that the people you feel most different from in childhood become the target of your later sexual attractions, with gender non-conformers tending toward same-sex attractions and gender conformers tending toward opposite-sex attractions.

The evidence for this, though, has been elusive. Also, there are other possible explanations. Yet another possibility is that fantasizing about straight men may be a way that some gay men feel acceptance. Sexual fantasies involving straight men can represent a sort of acceptance by the very people who have been their aggressors for much of their life. These fantasies may give gay men the feeling that they are a part of their lives.
