The Salvation Army says it doesn’t discriminate against LGBTQ people. Critics say that’s not true. The organization does a lot to help underserved people, including members of the LGBTQ. The organization has sites that seek to debunk its anti-LGBTQ reputation, and posted testimonials to YouTube from both volunteers and members of the community helped by the Salvation Army. For decades, they’ve accused Salvationsts of denying some services to same-sex couples, advocating against gay rights and adhering to a traditional theology that considers gay sex sinful.

Allegations about the Salvation Army and gay discrimination date back decades. The organization’s historical stance on homosexuality has often reflected conservative Christian doctrine—treating same-sex relationships as “immoral” and advocating for celibacy rather than affirming LGBTQ+ identities. Our LGBTQ-friendly programs provide housing, food, counseling, community, and employment as we work to treat the symptoms, and ultimately the root causes, of prolonged alcohol and drug dependence.

More than a quarter of LGBTQ Americans are food insecure and rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The Salvation Army provides social services for more than 2, children each day who are placed with the charity by the government. The programs are funded almost exclusively by taxpayer money.

But they cannot use taxpayer money to discriminate against the very people who provide these funds. Previously, the social services unit had its own mission statement which was completely secular. They include many of the most respected senior managers in the agency.
