Due in part to his close relationship with best friend Patrick Star, the internet had long ago decided that SpongeBob was indeed gay. But the show’s creator, Stephen Hillenburg, dismissed. After years — decades, even — of speculation and outcry from the LGBTQ community that iconic cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants was one of their own, Nickelodeon has finally confirmed it.

And while some fans thought Nickelodeon was confirming that SpongeBob is gay—although they didn't specific what our favorite yellow sponge identifies as—the network could possibly be.
